We are honored to announce Palika Artistic Director of Heavy Hips Tribal Belly Dance 2004 Calabash Awardee "Wow - what a magical night! So many of you came to support me and your love pulsated right up to the stage. The troupe opened the festive gala with a burst of delightful colour admist swirling silk - and the lighting, the crowd's response, our joy to be there, was a palpable wave. The producers told us later it was the most powerful opening they've ever had for the award ceremony. The sword dance was all mystery and drippingly gooey slow tantalization and we closed with a yipping, hip tripping improv! My gourd was beautiful, my presenter the Goddess of Afro Brazilian Samba - Marsea Marquis my friend and joy to recieve the gorgeous gourd from. By the grace of the Goddess, Her message of women's empowerment, beauty, unity, strength and discipline of body, mind and spirit all came through. I dedicated the nite to all the women of Afghanistan, Iraq and in other disturbed locals of the Middle East and Central Asia - we hold the dance in our hearts and bodies, keeping sacred space for them to one day have life of safety, ease, peace and joy that will inspire them to dance the ancient dance of the Goddess in their homes and communities freely and with spontaneous joy. I was interviewed backstage for tv and lots of photo ops abounded. Thanks for the flowers the love and enthusiasm, it feels good to be acknowledged and appreciated for bringing the joy of this ancient dance into the lives of contemporary women's communities." 5th Annual Televised Calabash Awards Showcase Honoring Excellence in the Ethnic Arts Sunday March 14th Cabrillo College Theatre 7-10 PM Produced by SCEAN and SureThing Productions SCEAN www.ethnicarts.org or 420-2700 or scethnicarts@hotmail.com Showcase will feature Palika and Heavy Hips Tribal Belly Dance as the Opener!
